SILC Congress resolution in regard to the federal Rehabilitation Act
NOTE: As many of you know, the federal Rehabilitation Act was authorized
only through September 30, 2003. It is time that it is reauthorized so that
people with disabilities can get the services we need. It is particularly
important that the language changes made by NCIL in regard to SILC duties
are incorporated, along with the SILC Standards and Indicators, into this
re-authorization, so that SILCs can continue to provide the necessary
services to strengthen and expand the network of Centers in their states.
Here is the SILC Congress Resolution that was passed. The language in
the brackets are friendly amendments that were accepted.
"Whereas the last reauthorization of the Rehabilitation Act was set to
expire several years ago but has been extended annually since, therefore
be it
"Resolved that the SILC Congress request that the Congress of the United
States reauthorize the Rehabilitation Act, including the SILC Standards
and Indicators [and other recommendations of the NCIL Rehab Act
subcommittee], with all due speed [and that its officers transmit this
request to Congress]; Be it further
"Resolved that the SILC Congress encourage SILCs to inform their state
Congressional delegations about the need to reauthorize the
Rehabilitation Act; and be it finally
"Resolved that the SILC Congress calls on all SILC members and SILC
staff to contact their members of Congress to ask them to support
reauthorization of the Rehabilitation Act."
NCIL wants feedback on WHAT your Senators and Representatives tell you
about whether or not they will vote to reauthorize the Rehab Act.
